Streaming Video: Kanopy

KANOPY

Temporary Change to Kanopy

For the rest of the fiscal year, we have switched our Kanopy model from SMART PDA to mediated. This means that all films not previously licensed will need to be requested using Kanopy's title request form or by submitting the library's media purchase request form

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kanopy is a video streaming solution for colleges offering a "Netflix-like" user experience and a broad selection of over 26,000 documentaries, feature films and training videos from thousands of producers.

  • Coverage – The library will have access only to licensed films during mediation.
  • Requesting films in Kanopy - Only requests for course materials will be accepted. All other requests will be rejected.  Films added during mediation will be licensed for one year from the date added to the portal.
  • How do I request a film?  Patrons can submit a title request from within Kanopy or use our streaming (film) media purchase/renewal request form to submit a title request. Submitting requests via Kanopy platform is preferred as patrons will get an email from the vendor as soon as the film is approved with access link.
    • Can I use any email to submit a film request? No, be sure to provide your UTRGV email so that we know you are affiliated with the university. Using another email may cause delays as we confirm you are affiliated with the university.
    • What course related information should I include and why? Including the information below in the initial request will avoid delays and help us demonstrate impact in student savings and ROI as well as help us advocate for funding. We ask that you include how the film will be used in the request. This will help us prioritize and evaluate requests. To avoid delays or rejection of your request, please be thorough in your response.
      • Instructor
      • Course name
      • Course section
      • How will the film be used in the course
      • # of students enrolled
  • Allow time for processing and licensing of films. Submit requests early to allow sufficient time for processing and licensing of films. Most films may take between 2 - 3 days to become active.
  • I requested a film during mediation and it was licensed for one year.  Do I need to submit a renewal for this title? Films licensed during mediation will be added to our SMART PDA program in September to avoid a break in coverage, so you do not need to submit a renewal request. However, it is recommended to submit a renewal request near the film's license end date via the media purchase/renewal request form to ensure your film is licensed should we transition to mediation again in the future.
  • Public Performance Rights (PPR) – Most Kanopy films have public performance rights and will have the PPR logo.
