KANOPY

Changes to Kanopy

Due to high costs and unsustainability of current pricing model, as of October 1, 2020, Kanopy has changed to a mediated model where acquisition of films will be restricted to faculty and course related requests.  If funds permit, requests from students and other campus members will be considered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kanopy is a video streaming solution for colleges offering a "Netflix-like" user experience and a broad selection of over 26,000 documentaries, feature films and training videos from thousands of producers.

  • Coverage – The library will have access only to licensed films until license expires. Films are licensed for one year.
  • Requesting films in Kanopy - Requests for course materials is prioritized.  Films are licensed for one year from the date added to the portal. Patrons will need to submit a renewal request if film will continue to be used to avoid a break in coverage.
    • How do I request a film?  Patrons can submit a title request from within Kanopy or use our streaming (film) media purchase/renewal request form to submit a title request. Submitting requests via Kanopy platform is preferred as patrons will get an email from the vendor as soon as the film is approved with access link.
    • Can I use any email to submit a film request? No, be sure to provide your UTRGV email so that we know you are affiliated with the university. Using another email may cause delays as we confirm you are affiliated with the university.
    • What course related information should I include and why? Including the information below in the initial request will avoid delays and help us demonstrate impact in student savings and ROI as well as help us advocate for funding. We ask that you include how the film will be used in the request. This will help us prioritize and evaluate requests. To avoid delays or rejection of your request, please be thorough in your response.
      • Instructor
      • Course name
      • Course section
      • How will the film be used in the course
      • # of students enrolled
  • Allow time for processing and licensing of films. Submit requests early to allow sufficient time for processing and licensing of films. Most films may take between 2 - 3 days to become active.
  • I requested a film and license is expiring. How to I submit a renewal for this title? Use our streaming (film) media purchase/renewal request form to submit your renewal request.
  • Public Performance Rights (PPR) – Most Kanopy films have public performance rights and will have the PPR logo.
